The Tamil Nadu Selection Committee has received a total of 72,627 applications for the MBBS and BDS courses. Of them, 41,723 are for government quota seats and 30,904 for management quota seats.

Earlier, July 23 was the last date for submitting applications for these courses for the 2026-27 session, but the Selection Committee reopened the online application window till July 27. This was strictly meant for candidates whose applications were yet to be submitted.

According to the National Testing Agency, 61,306 candidates from Tamil Nadu qualified in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). With 72,627 applications received, officials explained that students not only from Tamil Nadu but also from all over India could apply for the management quota seats, meaning that they were not domicile-based. Additionally, there could be some duplications or double applications.

When the NTA states that 61,306 students from Tamil Nadu have qualified in the NEET, the figure is based on the information provided by candidates who have declared Tamil Nadu as their domicile. The domicile is not checked, and this is self-claimed, and shows only a trend. The NTA or the Medical Counselling Committee under the Directorate-General of Health Services does not undertake verification, officials said.

According to the National Medical Commission’s seat matrix for the undergraduate courses, Tamil Nadu added 950 additional MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges for the 2026-27 academic year. With this, the total number of MBBS seats at 78 colleges in the State stands at 13,999.
