In the 2010s it was impossible to avoid Jessie J, with her slew of hits dominating the airwaves and critics hailing her 'the voice of a generation'.

Yet in recent years, the Price Tag singer, 38, has slowly faded out of the charts, having failed to secure a Top 10 single in over a decade.

Last year, she attempted to revive her career with the release of Don't Tease Me With A Good Time, with the 16-track project her first full-length body of work in nearly eight years.

Yet it failed to set the charts alight, limping into No.19, while the five singles that predated its release failed to chart at all.

In recent months, Jessie has been dealt another blow when she split from basketball player boyfriend Chanan Colman, with whom she shares three-year-old son, Sky.

It is not known exactly why they split, with Jessie announcing the news on Monday but revealing the pair ended their romance 'some time ago.'

Creative challenges

When Jessie J burst onto the showbiz scene with her debut single in 2010, it looked like the world would be at Jessie's feet.

Do It like a Dude peaked at No.2 on the UK Singles Chart, made it to No. 8 in New Zealand and earned her Best Song at the 2011 MOBO Awards.

It was swiftly followed by Price Tag with B.o.B, which spent two weeks at No.1 in the UK, also achieved the top spot in France, Ireland and New Zealand, and reached No.23 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the States.

In 2011, she released her debut album, Who You Are, which reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, No. 11 on the US Billboard 200, and saw more success with the release of Nobody's Perfect, Who You Are, Domino and Laserlight.

As a result, by 2012, Jessie had made history as the first British female to have six top 10 singles from the same album.

Her success continued with the release of her next two albums, 2013's Alive and 2014's Sweet Talker - which featured the hit single Bang Bang that went multi-platinum worldwide.

However, her light began to dim in the years that followed, with Jessie making her way through eight managers and failing to reach peak chart position.

It took three years for her to announce her next album, R.O.S.E., to come in 2017, with Jessie admitting she had started to struggle with songwriting.

She told Billboard: 'I wasn't enjoying the music I was making as much as I should. I wasn't writing because I didn't want to make music that escaped me from that. I wanted to make music that put me in the feeling.

'But to do that I had to be really strong; to know that I wasn't going to be able to be pushed and fall over. That's why it took me a long time. I don't feel that I've ever learned so much about myself at any other time in my life.'

Ahead of the album's release, Jessie released four singles, Real Deal, Think About That, Not My Ex and Queen - but none of them entered the main UK Singles Chart.

She then baffled fans by announcing she had signed up to take part in Chinese singing competition, I Am a Singer, dubbed Asia's answers to The X Factor for professional singers.

Jessie won the competition, making history as the first international singer to ever do so, after performing Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing to a whopping one billion viewers.

Yet her decision to take part was widely mocked online, with many questioning why she felt the need to take part in a TV talent show given her success.

In response, Jessie simply mused: 'Why not? There’s nothing I can’t do. That’s how I feel in my heart… I’m turning 30 this year and I just think, why not?'

Following her win she released album R.O.S.E. in four parts in May 2018, but unlike her previous three albums it failed to make an impression on the UK charts and missed the Top 50 on the US Billboard 200.

Five months later she released her first festive album, This Christmas Day, but it only made it to No.92 in the charts.

Jessie then took a six-year break, releasing just a handful of singles - that failed to chart - before announcing her flop comeback album Don't Tease Me With A Good Time.

'Diva' meltdowns

Part of Jessie's quick demise in the charts could be down to the public's perception of her behaviour and so-called 'diva' attitude.

Reports of antisocial antics first began when she signed up to be a coach on The Voice UK in 2011, at the height of her fame.

According to The Sun, she first raised eyebrows when she banned boss Danny Cohen, then the most senior figure at BBC1, from entering her dressing room when he tried to praise her performance.

A TV source said: 'The diva in Jessie wasn’t helped by her inner circle. They refused to make her accessible, despite her being on a mainstream show. They made her feel like the special one.

'She was the ultimate diva, which irked producers because Tom [Jones] and Will[i.am] were by far the more seasoned performers. Jessie was just the new kid on the block.'

Addressing the rumours, Jessie told Grazia the following year that the only diva-esque demand she had made on the show was to request a lava lamp for her dressing room.

Yet she noted: ‘Sometimes you have to be a diva. All the artists I admire – from Madonna to Whitney to Mariah – have been called divas.

'If you are strong, if you have vision, if you are an artist, you have to do what you believe in. And if you get called a diva for it, so what?’

Jessie's 'diva' antics began when she signed up to The Voice UK in 2011, with producers said to be surprised she was more high maintenance than her seasoned fellow judges (L-R Danny O'Donoghue, Tom Jones, Jessie and Will.i.am in 2013)

Jessie was also reported to be a diva when she signed up to judge The Voice Australia in 2015.

According to Woman's Day magazine, she had been demanding luxury mansions, asking for US clothing to be flown into Australia and bossing around make-up artists.

The magazine also reported that Jessie had been complaining to fellow mentors that singer Delta Goodrem is only famous Down Under.

Reflecting on that period, Jessie told BBC in 2019: 'No one tells you how to do your first day at work. Whether you're a hairdresser or a plumber, you walk in, and you're scared, and you're awkward, and you say stupid things, and you make mistakes.

'But when you do those things in the limelight, they become something that people hold against you.

'Even watching The Voice Kids, I'm aware there are moments where I know how I can come across. Like, when my face isn't doing anything, but I'm actually really deep in thought and I'm taking a second. But it's read differently and it's really hard to constantly justify.

'A lot of people in the limelight become what people think they are. And I went that way for a little while. Like, there's a very thin line between diva and survival. And at the beginning of my career, I just felt misunderstood... I regret the way I handled certain things, but I can't define myself on the past.'

Celebrity feuds

During her two-decades in the spotlight, Jessie has also been linked to a number of high-profile feuds.

Her various spats with Delta Goodrem on The Voice Australia made for uncomfortable viewing, with the drama so heightened that Delta stormed off set during the blind auditions.

While some viewers thought the clashes were scripted to create good TV, the show's producer John Walsh later said there was no publicity stunt and the tension was very real.

'It was definitely genuine and they resolved it by the end of the series,' he explained.

'They are both professionals and they do come at things from a completely different way... and in the end they respected each other and they just have different approaches.'

He then explained that the women were very professional and sorted it out between them quickly: 'They went to Delta's trailer one night, after the recordings, and sorted things out.'

Jessie also addressed the fallout, saying: 'Everyone knows that last year Delta and I had our moments where we debated and we didn't see eye to eye.

'(But) this year, we've been great, we know each other now and it's been great.'

Discussing the origin of the hit , Jessie claimed that Nicki had asked to appear on the single with her, which also featured Ariana Grande.

She told Glamour in 2021: 'We [Ariana and I] both loved it. We just said, "Why don't we both do it?" So Ariana stayed on the second verse, I recorded the first verse, and then Nicki was played it in the studio and was like, "I've got to jump on this." We didn't go to her and ask; she wanted to do it.'

Yet Nicki was quick to hit back, taking to X/Twitter to pen: 'Babe @JessieJ, I didn't hear the song \& ask 2 get on it. The label asked me 2 get on it \& paid me. How would I have heard the song? chiiille what am I the damn song monitor? Snoopin around for songs chile?'

Jessie then shared a lengthy apology, in which she stated: 'I’m sorry I got the story wrong all these years.

'I was told you heard the song and wanted to be on it by someone clearly gassing me up at the label. (Bless them and my naive a–) Thank you for clarifying I was wrong on that and Do it like dude. Told me huh.'

Jessie was also called out by Mel B, after the Spice Girls singer branded her a 'd***head'.

Mel made the comments in 2022 during an appearance on The Big Narstie Show, when Mo Gilligan asked who she considered to be the 'biggest dickhead celebrity'.

Not skipping a beat, Mel replied: 'So, there's a few. James Corden, Geri Halliwell, Jessie J and me.'

Jessie didn't address the comment at the time, but later said she was confused as to why she was mentioned in the first place.

She said on KISS FM: 'I've never worked with this person but I just want to acknowledge it in this moment because I feel safe. I probably shouldn't but here we go.

'So on TV, she said I was a d***head, out of nowhere. And I was like, I've literally met her once.'

Things seemed to be well between the pair in 2011, with Jessie booked to support the star on the US leg of her California Dreams tour.

She had to pull out at the last minute because she broke her foot, with Jessie saying she was in tears at the decision.

Yet it seems things soured later on, with her fans convinced that Jessie was throwing shade at Katy in her song Complicated last year, in which she reflected on her early years in the music industry.

In the track, Jessie crooned: 'Katy told me that they all hate me, that I do too much, bang bang, can’t sit at the table with the label.'

Neither Jessie or Katy have publicly addressed reports of a fallout.

Debilitating health woes

Undoubtedly another factor in Jessie's career highs and lows has been her ongoing health issues, which has seen her have to spend prolonged periods out of the public eye.

Over the years she has suffered from an abundance of woes, including a tragic miscarriage, deafness and a heart condition.

In 2012 she revealed she inherited Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, a heart condition, from her father.

WPW causes the heart to beat abnormally fast for periods of time and Jessie suffered a stroke when she was just 17 years old as a result of the condition.

She spent her childhood in and out of hospital, and speaking in her autobiography Nice To Meet You, Jessie explained: 'I remember collapsing a lot and having seizures.

'I was a sickly, skinny girl who had a slight green tinge to her skin because of the drugs and who was always in and out of hospital.

'There would be times when I'd be acting normal and then I'd just collapse. It was only then that people would realise I wasn't well. I suppose I was good at covering it up and I know I'm very good at that now.'

The star also has a diagnosis of adenomyosis - a condition where tissue which normally lines the uterus starts growing into its muscular wall.

Adenomyosis is linked to infertility and an increased risk of miscarriage and premature birth.

Jessie was told in 2014 that her chances of conceiving naturally were slim, but she declined an offer of a hysterectomy.

She instead decided to change her diet in the hopes she could one day get pregnant, she revealed in 2019.

Then in 2021, Jessie shared the news that she was expecting her first child after 'deciding to have a baby on my own'.

However she later suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage, with doctors unable to find a heartbeat when she went for her third scan.

Jessie was left devastated after the baby loss, before going on to welcome her son Sky with her basketball player boyfriend Chanan Safir Colman in May 2023.

In 2020, Jessie revealed she had suffered with Ménière's disease, a chronic inner ear disorder, which left her hospitalised on Christmas Eve with dizzy spells and deafness.

In an Instagram post at the time, Jessie told fans: 'I woke up and felt like I was completely deaf in my right ear, couldn't walk in a straight line.'

Describing her symptoms she said: 'I haven't sung for so long and when I sing loud, it sounds like there's someone trying to run out of my ear.'

Jessie also revealed she had been diagnosed with acid reflux and vocal nodules.

Vocal nodules are hard, rough, noncancerous growths on your vocal folds that can be caused by overusing your voice and continue to grow if the voice isn't rested.

The growths prevent vocal folds from vibrating normally as they stop them from closing which in turn lets air through and dries them out. This can change the pitch and tone of your voice and make it more likely for a singer to lose their voice.

Once nodules have turned hard they can only be removed through surgery, however Jessie's went away with rest suggesting they were soft pre-nodules - which can go away on their own.

In 2024, she announced she had been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

In a candid Instagram post, the singer shared that it had made her 'rethink' her whole life, but added having ADHD felt like 'a superpower as long as you look at it from the right perspective'.

She also penned how having a baby had 'exposed' the conditions more before admitting that she knew she had been 'a little different' her whole life.

Last June, Jessie was dealt one of her strongest blows when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

After she underwent a mastectomy in June, she was told by doctors she would need a second surgery.

The star was then left 'frustrated' after doctors postponed her second cancer surgery despite the singer cancelling her tour to go under the knife.

Jessie apologised to fans for needlessly scrapping her shows, but admitted she was now trying to 'make the best' of a bad situation.

She said that following the news immediately went into 'mum mode' and got to organising and revealed there would be new dates for her US tour.

In June this year, Jessie revealed the great news that she is cancer-free, 11 months after her diagnosis.

She shared the news on Instagram after going to hospital for her annual check-up, and said she 'sobbed for hours' when she learned the results.

Before going into remission, Jessie reflected on some of the lower moments of her cancer battle as she said: 'I had moments where I thought "this is going to go left and I'm going to die."'

She added however: 'But I weirdly kind of enjoy bad things happening to me sometimes as it means I need to grow. I believe bad things happen to me so I can help other people who will then go through it.'

In December 2025, Jessie told Women's Health: 'I've always had obscure health issues that [doctors] can't figure out. Nothing has broken me. And I believe I've gone through all the things I have to help people. Even if it's just to write songs about it.'

Public heartbreaks

This week, Jessie revealed she had split from partner Chanan after five years together.

Sharing a picture of the pair with son Sky, three, on Instagram, Jessie wrote: 'Chanan and I decided to end our romantic relationship some time ago.

'It has been a sad and difficult situation, but we have been focused on navigating the change privately and positively for a healthy and happy co parenting environment for our son, and ourselves.

'Unfortunately being in the public eye this is the easiest way to let people know the truth, before rumours circulate or a false narrative is written.'

She continued: 'We will always continue supporting each other with love, respect and care as friends and most importantly being Sky's Mum and Dad.

'So if you see us out and about together as a family, or posting each other on socials every now and again. That’s exactly what we are doing.

'Raising and loving Sky together, supported with a positive friendship.'

Back in May 2025, Jessie revealed that marriage was not something she was too focused on because having a child together meant they were already 'locked in.'

She expected they would wed 'one day', but added that it was not something particularly important for them to do right now.

Following the split, Jessie posted a number of cryptic messages commenting on how to have a healthy relationship.

The Flashlight songstress wrote: 'Unhealthy love is when two people expect each other to solve the others' problems.

'Healthy love is when two people acknowledge and address their own problems with each other's support.'

In a separate post, she cryptically added: 'Too many of us put deadlines on love, timelines on success and then wonder why we don't feel.

'Emotions are not based on your age, it's never too late or early, you're exactly where you need to be.'

Four months after the split she dated dancer Max Pham for seven months, with their romance seemingly ending in a more healthy way.

When questioned about her relationship status in an Instagram Q\&A, she insisted 'nothing dramatic' happened and that Max was an 'amazing man'.

Jessie penned: 'Open, happy and loving myself. Max and I have been just friends for a while now. Nothing dramatic happened. So please don't over react.

'He is an amazing man. We both have so much respect and love for each other. It just wasn't right romantically. So we decided just friends it is.

'The only reason I even talk about it is because it becomes weird and a little difficult when people live in your past. I hate how much of a big deal other people can make your personal breakups. We are both happy, living and loving our lives.'
