A traffic police inspector was arrested after he allegedly molested a woman while she was walking on a street in Velachery on Sunday night.

The accused, identified as Manimaran, is attached to the Traffic Enforcement Wing in Ranipet district and lives in Velachery. The police said he had returned to Chennai on Sunday and allegedly consumed alcohol with his brother-in-law before the two went out on a motorcycle.

The incident occurred on Orandiamman Koil Street, where the woman and her husband were walking. The police said Manimaran, who was riding pillion allegedly approached the woman, touched her inappropriately, and attempted to flee. The woman raised an alarm, prompting her husband and nearby residents to block the motorcycle. However, Manimaran identified himself as a Police Inspector and argued with the crowd. Then, the men fled from the spot.

The victim subsequently lodged a complaint at the Velachery police station. Using the motorcycle’s registration details, the police traced Manimaran and arrested him. A case was registered against him on charges of sexual harassment. He was produced before a magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody.
