A man drowned while fishing in a tank near Humcha at Hosanagara taluk on Tuesday.
The deceased, Mahendra, aged about 30 was a resident of Humcha. He had gone to the tank with a few friends to catch fish. He entered the water with a rope tied around his waist but failed to return to the surface at around 12.30 p.m. His friends were unable to rescue him.
The incident was reported to the Fire and Emergency Services in Hosanagara. A rescue team led by Fire Officer Anandappa N. reached the spot with a boat and retrieved the body after a search operation.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Anandappa said the rope tied around Mahendra’s waist helped the rescue personnel locate him. “It appears that he got trapped in shrubs and silt at the bottom of the tank. Our staff was able to retrieve the body,” he said.
Personnel from the Ripponpet police were present at the spot, and further investigation is under way.
