If you’re craving pizza and the thought of adding more heat to the house by turning on the oven feels unbearable, Asda may have a budget-friendly solution. The supermarket has released the George home grill top pizza oven that lets you make homemade pizzas outdoors using your existing gas or charcoal BBQ. AKA, you can enjoy crispy, restaurant-style bases without heating up your kitchen.

We haven’t tested this pizza oven ourselves, so we can’t comment on the results, but it could be a handy addition for summer evenings spent in the garden. Designed to cook pizzas up to 12in, it comes with a ceramic pizza stone to help create a crisp base, as well as a built-in temperature gauge and a pizza paddle.

Asda’s grill top pizza oven

The compact grill top pizza oven cooks pizzas up to 12in (30cm) and requires a barbecue with a minimum cooking grill size of W45 x D40cm. With the oven you’ll also get a 30.5cm diameter pizza paddle for easily sliding your pizzas onto the ceramic stone and serving them once cooked.

It also includes an integrated temperature gauge and for easy cleaning, the ceramic cooking surface is removable.

Best tried and tested pizza ovens

For more recommendations, expert appliances reviewer Rachael Penn has tested a range of the best outdoor and indoor pizza ovens. Here are her top picks.

During testing, the Gozney arc lite was awarded the best outdoor pizza oven, with Rachael describing it as “a pleasure to use.” She noted that the pizza oven reaches full temperature (500C) quickly, after which “pizza cooked in less than two minutes and, time after time, came out of the oven with a crispy crust and properly bubbling cheese.” She found “The pizza cooked evenly each time, with no cold spots and or burnt bits.”

For a budget option, the Casa Mia bravo excels. Rachael wrote that it is “impressive for its price” and that it was the best budget outdoor pizza she tested. She added: “It’s gas powered and the gas runs around the edges of the oven, so you get a good even heat inside. It heated up reasonably quickly and produced really good pizza with a nice coloured crust.”
