The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday condemned the alleged police action at its central office in New Delhi and demanded the immediate withdrawal of cases registered against student leaders and protesters, alleging that the Union government was attempting to suppress democratic dissent.

The CPI(M) Vijayawada City Committee organised a protest in the city, with party leaders and activists staging a dharna against the alleged attempt by the Delhi Police to enter the party headquarters and arrest student leader Aishe Ghosh.

Addressing the protesters, CPI(M) State Secretariat member Ch. Babu Rao and State Committee member Donepudi Kashinath alleged that the Centre and the Delhi Police were targeting students and political activists who had taken part in peaceful protests. They described the alleged attempt to arrest Ms. Ghosh and the registration of criminal cases against student leaders as politically motivated and undemocratic.

The leaders alleged that the Centre was attempting to silence those questioning its policies by foisting false cases and resorting to arrests. They claimed that despite assurances that no action would be taken against peaceful protesters, the police had initiated coercive measures against students and their supporters.

Alleging excessive use of force against demonstrators in different parts of the country, the CPI(M) leaders urged the Union government to uphold the constitutional right to peaceful protest.
