Glen Hansard, an Oscar-winning songwriter who starred in the music-themed films Once and The Commitments, has died.

Hansard died in a motorcycle crash Wednesday morning in Dublin, Ireland, according to the BBC. He was 56.

Hansard, who was the longtime leader of the Irish band the Frames, played Outspan Foster in director Alan Parker’s 1991 music drama The Commitments.

In the 2006 musical romance Once, written and directed by former Frames bassist John Carney, Hansard starred as Guy opposite Markéta Irglová’s Girl. The duo also won a Best Original Song Oscar for writing the ballad “Falling Slowly,” which chronicled their romance in the film.

Hansard and Irglová’s musicians in the film were a fictionalized version of their real-life folk duo, called The Swell Season. Hansard and Irglová were also in a real-life relationship from 2006 to 2009.

Once was also adapted as a Broadway musical, and went on to win eight Tony Awards including Best Musical in 2012.

Bruce Springsteen paid tribute to Hansard in an Instagram post on Wednesday, writing, “Here on E Street, we are heartbroken over the death of Glen Hansard. We met in Ireland many years ago and he was always nothing but a great musician, a good friend and a generous and gracious man. Always positive, smiling and ready to sing. God bless him and his loved ones.”

Born Glen James Hansard on April 21, 1970, in Dublin, the musician’s screen debut came in the indie film hit The Commitments, which chronicled a group of young working-class adults in Dublin who formed an R&B band.

Andrew Strong, who played Deco Cuffe, the lead singer of the band in The Commitments, posted a tribute to Hansard on Facebook on Wednesday, writing, "I’m devastated to hear the sad news Glen Hansard has passed away - it’s a truly senseless tragic loss. [My] condolences to his family and friends and everyone who loved his music. Rest in peace, brother.”

In addition to The Commitments and Once, Hansard voiced the role of “Irish Guy” in a 2009 episode of The Simpsons, and played a bit role as a guard in director Joe Wright’s 2021 adaptation of the Cyrano de Bergerac tale Cyrano, starring Peter Dinklage in the title role.

Hansard and Markéta Irglová were also featured in 2011 music documentary, The Swell Season.
