SEOUL, July 30 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., an electronic components affiliate of Samsung Electronics Co., said Thursday its second-quarter net income rose nearly 140 percent from a year earlier, driven by strong demand for products used in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

Net profit for the April-June period came to 328.3 billion won (US$227.2 million), up 139.2 percent from a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing.

It posted 440.4 billion won in operating profit for the quarter, compared with 213 billion won a year ago.

Sales rose 24.2 percent on-year to 3.46 trillion won, marking a quarterly record.

The earnings met market expectations. The average estimate of net profit by analysts stood at 326.5 billion won, according to a survey by Yonhap Infomax, the financial data firm of Yonhap News Agency.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics said its earnings improved as sales of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) increased for data center applications, including AI servers and network equipment, as well as automotive applications.

The company also saw higher shipments of high-value semiconductor substrates to major global technology companies, along with increased demand for automotive components used in advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving technologies.
