If you want to boost your child’s water confidence, a comfortable, leak-proof pair of goggles are an essential buy. Whether it’s for weekly swimming lessons or holidays spent splashing in the pool or sea, it’s worth buying the best kids’ goggles you can find.

There are certain features which are non-negotiable when buying a pair of swimming goggles for your child. Firstly – and crucially – they have to be watertight. Nothing derails a swimming lesson or puts a kid off more than having to contend with leaky goggles and stingy chlorine-irritated eyes, so you want a pair of kids’ goggles with well-fitting eye cups and adjustable straps to get the perfect fit.

Chances are you’ll spot a Zoggs display at most leisure centres, and they’ve become synonymous with kids’ swimming lessons. You’re in safe hands with Zoggs, and these junior goggles (suitable for kids age six to 14) have become the pair my testers reach for the most.

The curved lenses offer a noticeably wider range of vision compared to some of the others in my roundup (they provide 180-degree peripheral vision), and my nine- and 10-year-old testers said the visibility underwater was “perfect”. Featuring the brand’s signature Soft Seal™, these goggles were up there as one of the comfiest we tried, as confirmed by my testers. They sat comfortably against the eye contour, and the hypo-allergenic, thermoplastic rubber created a watertight seal, so we experienced no leaks, even with plenty of underwater swimming. The maximum UV protection make these ideal for summer holidays too.

Featuring a standard side adjust system, these were easy enough to get the right fit, and the split strap held them nicely in place both with and without a swimming hat. While they do sit towards the higher end of my roundup pricewise, at £16.50 I think they’re well worth it and should last your child many years.

For less than £9 these great value kids’ goggles from Decathlon are such a fantastic budget buy. My six-year-old loved the large lens style which, while not offering quite the wide scope of the Zoggs phantom 2.0, provided excellent visibility.

The silicone frame is incredibly soft and bendy, which helped my testers get a comfy and leak-free fit. Unlike most of the other goggles in my roundup, the Decathlon goggles feature a buckle at the back for adjusting the length of the strap. While my little tester wasn’t too fussed about this and it’s not particularly bulky, it may be something that could bother some kids. I’d say it’s worth adjusting these as best you can before your child puts them on, as it can get a little fiddly (with the potential for hair pulling) otherwise.

There’s no set age-range given for these goggles (they’re a one-size fits all “small”) but with the thick strap, wide eye cups and room for adjustment, I’d say they’d suit from around five all the way up to young teens. Even I managed to get away with wearing them on a family swim when I’d forgotten my own goggles and, despite being a little tight around the nose bridge, they did the job. Including both anti-fogging treatment and UV protection, these offer all the features you need, at a low price.

If your child takes regular swimming lessons you need a pair of goggles that stay put, keep water out and don’t cost a fortune. My children have left way too many pairs of goggles by the swimming pool showers over the years (obviously never to be seen again), which is why the price of these Forza goggles make them so appealing. But along with a total bargain price, they are genuinely excellent quality.

My six-year-old tester was fully won over by the purple and teal colourway, complete with pink lenses, as well as how comfortably they sat on her face. The silicone eye cups had great suction, and these remained leak-proof, even with lots of jumping into the pool.

While they don’t offer as wide a field of vision as some of the other goggles in my roundup, it certainly wasn’t limited, and my tester loved the underwater visibility through her fancy pink lenses. The snug fit is helped by the split strap and silicone seals, and the goggles feature both anti-fog lenses and UV protection. One of my favourite touches is that the goggles come with a hard case, so they won’t get scratched or damaged when chucked into your child’s swimming bag on a regular basis. Adjusting goggles is up there as one of the most annoying parenting duties ever, which is why I think these easy-fit goggles are worth every penny. The clever push buttons at the sides of the mask made these by far the easiest to adjust out of all the goggles we tested. You only have to push the button gently and pull the straps to loosen or tighten, so it was something my six-year-old could manage by themselves.

The mask-style fit got the thumbs up from all my testers too, with a wide, curved lens that offered a fantastic field of vision – the blue tint also went down well. The silicone skirt kept the mask firmly, yet comfortably, in place, as did the split strap design, and we had no problems with fogging or leaks during testing.

It may be one of the priciest in my roundup, but these mask-style goggles feel very well made and work perfectly for swimming lessons or pool fun on holiday.

My older testers were big fans of the sleek, sporty, streamlined style of these great value goggles from Splash About. As well as looking “cool”, the mirrored lenses really helped reduce the glare from the sun during an outdoor swim (and for indoor swimmers, they are handy for reducing the dazzle of brightly lit pools).

Like the Decathlon goggles, these feature a back clasp for adjusting, although this one is less chunky and my 10-year-old tester found it easier to adjust himself when the goggles were on his head.

We found the soft silicone frame to be very flexible and, as a result, our testers agreed these were up there as one of the comfiest pairs of goggles they tested. With a wide field of vision and anti-fog technology, these are a reliable and well-priced pair of goggles for tweens.

This gem-encrusted, glittery swim mask is a world away from your usual bog-standard swimming goggles. My six-year-old couldn’t believe they were for swimming and felt extra fancy as she splashed about in the paddling pool in these sparkly beauties.

They may be a little heavier than the Speedo goggle mask, but do feature an anti-fog coating and UV protection, as well as being 100 per cent latex-free. The thick strap did a good job of holding the mask firmly in place, although we found this to be the most time-consuming to adjust with the traditional buckles on each side. When I tried these on, I found the mermaid tails printed on the lens distracting, but my six-year-old barely noticed when she was wearing them.

Once on, the mask really did fix well to my tester’s face and after numerous dunks underwater it remained leak-free. These are the heaviest out of all the goggles we tested and this, combined with the bulk, mean these are probably not the best choice for swimming lessons. But for holidays in the sun, these are such a fun way to protect your kid’s eyes in the water.

As you’d expect from a leading brand like Zoggs, these goggles really feel like they are going to withstand years of swimming lessons. The silicone split-strap is strong and durable, but with enough stretch to get the best fit, and the side buckles were the easiest to adjust out of all the goggles, bar the Speedo Biofuse 2.0. I loved the quick slide feature, which made adjustments super quick – an essential when you’re poolside, dealing with little kids.

What my six-year-old tester particularly liked was the air-filled cushioned seals around the eye cups, which not only felt really comfortable, but also offered great suction to make sure no water could leak in. They are so lightweight, offer a wide field of vision and don’t budge once they’re on, making them a brilliant first pair of goggles.
