A total of 19 resolutions were passed and 24 selected councillors spoke at the Greater Chennai Corporation Council Meeting on Wednesday (July 29, 2026) in both Question Hour and Zero Hour. Although the meeting extended for nearly six hours, this has been the least number of resolutions passed in the recent years.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) revised municipal property lease regulations on Wednesday. First-time allotments require public auctions. Commercial spaces face a 12-year maximum lease, renewed every three years. Non-commercial leases are restricted to three years, and government entities to nine years. Leases incur a 5% annual rent increase, with a 12% penal interest rate for delayed payments. Leases are transferable to heirs for a fee.

Monisha Security Agency secured contracts providing manpower for the Health, IT, and Parks departments. Approved service charges are (+) 2.00% for Health, (+) 0.01% for IT, and (-) 4.99% for Parks. The agency must pay minimum wages strictly based on the Collectorate Office Rate.

The Council extended outsourcing of contracts by three months for maintaining 3,01,969 streetlights and 507 high-mast lights across 15 zones. Agencies supply personnel and hydraulic ladder vehicles. Three-month extension costs include ₹73,27,281 for Zone I and ₹1,20,41,232 for Zone VII.

Fees waived

Building license and scrutiny fees totalling ₹5,03,000 were waived for the Adyar Cancer Institute’s new facility.

AIADMK councillor J. John flagged shortage of classrooms that forced students to sit under trees. He demanded immediate intervention to ensure the safety of students.

Ward Committee Chairperson (Kodambakkam) M. Krishna Moorthy said Amma Park in Saidapet had not been opened more than three months after renovation by CMDA.

The Mayor assured him that the park would be opened within a week’s time.
