Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan has suggested that Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu spread awareness among farmers about the impact of the Super El Nino and the resultant irrigation water crisis in the State.

In a meeting at his camp office near Mangalagiri on Thursday, Mr. Pawan Kalyan said that ways to mitigate the crisis should be explored. He pointed out that the farmers were deeply concerned about the water scarcity.

Public representatives and government officials should do their bit to save farmers from the crisis, he said and lauded Mr. Ramanaidu’s initiative of releasing 1,000 cusecs of water from the Yeleru project for the benefit of farmers in Pithapuram, Peddapuram, Jaggampeta and other constituencies in Kakinada district.

The Water Resources Minister said he was monitoring the situation under the Yeleru ayacut so that steps could be taken to solve the water shortage.

Mr. Pawan Kalyan wanted programmes to be organised to sensitise farmers about the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) to enable them to derive benefits thereof during natural calamities.

He ordered that steps be taken to regularly desilt canals and plug embankment leaks to prevent wastage of water.
