Mahindra has made it a tradition to unveil headline-grabbing concepts and products every Independence Day, and last year was no different. The carmaker pulled the wraps off four futuristic SUVs: Vision.S, Vision.T, Vision.X and Vision.SXT. Now, it looks like the first of those concepts is inching closer to production.

We recently spotted a heavily camouflaged Mahindra SUV testing on the outskirts of Chennai, and all signs point towards it being the production version of the Vision.S. Positioned as a compact SUV that is expected to join the Scorpio family, the Vision.S was arguably the most production-ready of the four concepts and is tipped to be the first to hit Indian roads by 2027.

With Mahindra's annual Independence Day event just weeks away, there's a strong possibility that the company could pull the wraps off the Vision.S in a near-production guise.

Concept-to-production: A faithful translation

Although the prototype is wrapped in heavy camouflage, a comparison with the Vision.S concept reveals that Mahindra has stayed remarkably faithful to the original design. The strongest resemblance lies in the SUV's proportions and overall silhouette.

Like the concept, the test mule sports an upright, boxy stance with a flat bonnet, squared-off wheel arches and a long, flat roofline. The slab-sided profile, chunky body cladding and upright greenhouse further reinforce its rugged, lifestyle-oriented character, giving the SUV a purposeful presence on the road.

Front-end retains the concept's bold identity

At the front, the prototype hints at a production version of the Vision.S' distinctive fascia. While most details remain concealed beneath the camouflage, the SUV appears to feature a wide rectangular grille with multiple vertical slats, closely resembling the concept's illuminated grille treatment. The upright front-end design has been retained, while the flat bonnet and muscular shoulders continue to lend the SUV a commanding stance. The lighting elements also appear to have carried over.

The Vision.S concept featured a heavily sculpted front bumper with silver skid plates, large air intakes and cube-shaped auxiliary lighting elements. However, the camouflage makes it difficult to determine whether these design cues have been retained or are simply hidden beneath the wrap. Some of these elements could still make their way to the production-spec SUV in a toned-down form.

Boxy profile remains intact

Viewed from the side, the production SUV looks almost like a toned-down version of the concept. The upright proportions remain intact, while the short front and rear overhangs continue to hint at respectable off-road capability. Even beneath the camouflage, the SUV retains the strong visual stance that made the Vision.S concept stand out.

The rear stays equally faithful to the concept. The tailgate-mounted spare wheel, one of the Vision.S' defining design elements has been carried over almost unchanged. The vertically stacked tail lamps closely mirror the concept's design, while the upright tailgate, rear quarter glass and roof profile further strengthen the resemblance.

The lower bumper appears to have been simplified for production, although, much like the front, the camouflage prevents a clear view of the final design.

Overall, the test mule suggests Mahindra has resisted the temptation to significantly soften the Vision.S for production. Instead, the company appears to have focused on making only the changes necessary for manufacturing, resulting in what could become one of Mahindra's most concept-faithful production SUVs in recent years.

What do we know so far?

Like its Vision siblings, the Vision.T, Vision.X and Vision.SXT, the Vision.S is underpinned by Mahindra's new NU_IQ monocoque platform. The architecture is designed to support petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains, along with both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.

While Mahindra has not revealed technical specifications, the Vision.S measures under four metres in length and rides on a generous 2,665mm wheelbase, promising a spacious cabin despite its compact footprint.

The concept also previewed a modern interior featuring a dual-screen dashboard layout, a redesigned steering wheel with 'VISION S' lettering, and a fully digital driver's display with new graphics. The central touchscreen is expected to run Mahindra's next-generation NU UX interface with wireless smartphone connectivity.
