While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has the lowest critics’ score for the actor’s Spider-Man films on Rotten Tomatoes, the site’s users feel otherwise.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day plays in preview screenings on Thursday before opening in theaters nationwide. Most critics got the opportunity to screen the film on Monday night, and the review embargo for Holland’s fourth Spider-Man movie was lifted on Tuesday morning.

Since then, movie journalists on Rotten Tomatoes have been filing their reviews and the critics’ score has fluctuated between 89% and 92%. As of Thursday, the critics’ score sits at 90% “fresh” on RT’s Tomatometer, making it the lowest-ranked Holland Spidey movie on the review aggregation site, behind 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home (93%), 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%) and 2019’s Spider-Man: Far from Home (91%).

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s RT critics’ score is the lowest among all of Holland’s films as the webslinger — and make no mistake about it, 90% is still an impressive score — RT users who have had early access to the movie seem adamant that it’s the actor’s best, as evidenced by the site’s newly-posted audience score.

Spider-Man Currently Has A 98% ‘Fresh’ Audience Score On Rotten Tomatoes

As of Thursday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned a near-perfect 98% “fresh” audience score on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings, breaking the record high for Holland’s top-ranked Spidey movie — Spider-Man: No Way Home — which earned a 97% audience score based on 50,000-plus ratings.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Far From Home is third on the RT’s Popcornmeter list of Holland’s Spider-Man films with a 95% “fresh” audience score based on 50,000-plus ratings. Finally, the first film in the franchise — Spider-Man: Homecoming — comes in last with audiences on RT with an 87% “fresh” audience score based on 100,000-plus ratings.

Granted, there’s a big difference between 1,000 verified user ratings by audience members on RT and 50,000 to 100,000, so it won’t come as a huge surprise if Spider-Man: Brand New Day loses its designation as the most popular Spider-Man film on RT in the coming weeks.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man finds himself facing the great power and responsibility of the superhero alone, since Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) erased the world’s memories of Peter at the conclusion of No Way Home. While Peter is struggling to somehow reconnect with his love, MJ (Zendaya), and best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon), a seemingly untraceable villain emerges to pose a massive threat to New York City.

Also starring Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Liza Colón-Zayas, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo, Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in theaters nationwide on Friday following preview screenings on Thursday.
