PH, Cambodia eye stronger agri trade, investments

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines and Cambodia aim to expand agricultural trade to boost investment and strengthen long-term cooperation.

In a Friday statement, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said both countries seek closer ties in agriculture, fisheries and related industries, citing opportunities to expand trade, foster partnerships and attract investment across the agri-fishery value chain.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said Cambodian Agriculture Minister Dith Tina’s recent visit could lead to new deals and partnerships.

“In 2026, there is significant growth in trade between the Philippines and Cambodia, and we’re looking forward to continuing that trajectory. Hopefully something good and more deals will come out of this mission,” Tiu Laurel said.

The DA said bilateral agricultural trade reached $15.9 million in 2025. It added the visit reflects a broader push to deepen intra-ASEAN trade, reduce supply chain risks and build a more resilient regional food system.

“Rather than relying heavily on distant markets, Southeast Asian economies are increasingly looking within the region to strengthen economic cooperation and create more integrated agricultural supply chains,” it said.

Officials and industry representatives from both countries also discussed livestock development, investment opportunities and technical cooperation.

Dith Tina stressed collaboration to address production challenges, especially high pork costs.

“The private sector and the government sector can work together to address production costs and ensure a stable and sustainable livestock supply,” he said. /pai INQ
