A flip phone that's just as good as Samsung's, but can be found at a much lower price, is the Motorola Moto Razr Ultra 2025.

The Motorola Razr Ultra 2025's biggest flaw is no longer a problem

You might not have heard a lot about the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025, and a big part of that is because it was too darn expensive.

With a starting price of $1,300, the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025 was $200 more than the Z Flip 7, which released a month later than the Moto.

It's worth pointing out that part of this gap is because the Razr was offered only as a 512GB variant in the US, and an equivalent was only $80 less.

But when buyers are weighing sticker prices, gut reactions matter, and it's clear the Moto Razr Ultra suffered as a result.

The price was such a big problem that our reviewer, Will Sattelberg, . The Razr Ultra simply couldn't be recommended when the asking price was so high.

The worst part was that it wasn't a bad phone. No, it was a perfectly good phone; it just couldn't justify such a high price.

But it's been a whole year since the Moto Razr Ultra 2025 came out, and things have changed.

You can now buy the Razr Ultra for $800, taking its price below the lower-powered Razr Plus's $1,000 price tag and within reaching distance of the 's $700 price.

That's a big change, and it makes the Razr Ultra a much more attractive prospect.

The Razr Ultra 2025 can stand toe-to-toe with Samsung's Z Flip

Two flippin' heavyweights

Why was the Razr Ultra so expensive? Well, it's because Motorola was finally trying something exciting and new (for it): A flagship phone with flagship specifications.

I know, it's a strange prospect.

Snark aside, the Moto Razr Ultra was the first of Motorola's folding phones to ship with flagship-level components, and while the Snapdragon 8 Elite is now fairly far behind the in the Z Flip 8, it's still a powerful chip.

Given how hard phone processors have plateaued in the last few years, you're unlikely to see any difference.

The other specs are as good, if not better than the Z Flip 8. 16GB of RAM is near to being opulent in this day and age, and 512GB of storage is more than enough for pretty much anyone.

The display is sharper than Samsung's, and although the underlying tech isn't as good, which means it won't be as colorful or bright, it has a 165Hz refresh rate.

The outer display is also good, and, like the Z Flip 8, it's fully functional for most apps.

Put this all together, and you have a phone that's more than capable, and a strong competitor for the Z Flip 8.

It still has problems

Motorola's Razr Ultra still has problems. I've already mentioned the display isn't as good as Samsung's Z Flip 8. But there are other problems to be aware of.

The software update promises are nowhere near as good as Samsung's. Samsung promises seven years of Android updates, while the Razr Ultra only gets three.

Also notable is the state of Motorola's operating system, which is packed full of bloatware. Some can be removed on setup, but a number can't, and it's always annoying when your new phone is jammed full of stuff you don't want.

It's the best flip phone for this price

But even with those fairly minor flaws in mind, it's hard to argue that this phone is anything other than an enormous bargain.

With a starting price of $800 from new, it's already at a $500 discount compared to its launch price. That makes it $400 less than the Galaxy Z Flip 8, and you can even find it for less if you're willing to shop refurbished and renewed.

Sure, it's not as large a bargain as — but if you're looking for an even bigger discount, you can check out the Moto Razr (2025) or Moto Razr Ultra (2025), which can also be found for less than their original prices.

So don't buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 — buy a Razr from last year instead.
