Egg procurement price in Namakkal, which was expected to touch an all-time high of ₹7, has fallen to ₹6 over weak demand across the country.

Popularly known as the Egg Town, Namakkal houses over 1,600 poultry farms and produces 6-7 crore eggs per day. It caters to egg demand across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry and supplies eggs to the ‘Noon Meal Scheme’ in schools. The district also exports eggs to a few countries.

Egg procurement prices are fixed by the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC-Namakkal Zone) on a daily basis based on demand and supply. On June 17, the procurement price climbed to a record ₹6.45, a first in Namakkal. Over the next one month, it rose steadily and touched ₹6.80 on July 16, staying steady until July 24. However, the price began to fall soon after and settled at ₹6 on July 30, staying unchanged on July 31 as well.

Demand crunch

NECC-Namakkal Zone treasurer Sundar Rajan said demand for eggs began to decrease after the onset of festivals in temples, especially in south Tamil Nadu, in the Tamil month of Aadi. Similarly, the Sawan month, running from July 30 to August 28, has begun in north India. Egg consumption drastically falls during this time, he said.

Egg procurement prices at various zones, including Andhra Pradesh, have come down drastically, affecting the price in the Namakkal NECC Zone, too. “If we do not reduce the price, eggs from Andhra Pradesh will enter Tamil Nadu market,” Mr. Sundar Rajan said.

Egg procurement prices may remain unchanged or even fall further over the next three months, as the Tamil month of Purattasi will begin after Sawan ends in north India, keeping egg demand tepid in the State. Around Deepavali, the prices will start to rise again, he added.
