Silver Ferns confirm Catherine Hall injury results

The Silver Ferns have confirmed Catherine Hall ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee at the Commonwealth Games.

The defender suffered the blow while running to the baseline in the fourth quarter of New Zealand’s 65-37 victory over Wales in Pool B, and was wheeled off the court.

The recovery timeline for ACL injuries is generally about nine months, ruling Hall out of October’s Constellation Cup against Australia and hampering her domestic season next year.

It is a cruel blow for Hall, who had only just returned from an ankle injury suffered mid-ANZ Premiership season while playing for the Northern Mystics.

Games rules dictate the Ferns are unable to replace Hall and will have to manage with Kelly Jackson, Karin Burger and Carys Stythe as their three defensive options.

Goal attack Georgia Heffernan also went off with an ankle injury in the Wales win, but New Zealand are hopeful she will be fit for tonight’s semi-final against England in Glasgow.

The winner qualifies for the gold medal match, and will face the victor of the second semi-final overnight between Australia and Jamaica.

New Zealand have moved through pool play unbeaten after wins against Scotland, Jamaica, Uganda, Wales and Trinidad & Tobago.

Hall’s injury comes against the backdrop of continued turmoil for the ANZ Premiership, with Netball New Zealand yet to confirm a domestic competition for next year.

It leaves the 22-year-old in a tricky spot for next year’s domestic season, given a nine-month recovery timeline would only have her fit by May.

Hall was statistically the top-performing defender for the five rounds of ANZ Premiership she played before getting injured, making her an obvious prospect for Super Netball clubs.

However, the injury means she will miss the start of the season, and it remains to be seen whether overseas clubs will want to pursue an injured player.
