Vibe coding has changed the way we code. Ever since AI tools got good at coding – think Claude Code, Codex, and the works – almost every company or developer wants to use AI to write code. And now another popular developer has found himself on the list – Minecraft's creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson. Notch says that he is moving to vibe coding for two reasons. One, he can’t find talented programmers, and two, he will feel less bad when he fires an AI chatbot.

In a post on X, Notch announced that he was going to try vibe coding, aka the use of AI to write code. But the Minecraft creator clarified that he did not make this decision because he didn't like programming.

Instead, Notch claimed that it was hard to find talented human developers to work with, and in the long run, he wouldn’t feel bad if he had to fire an AI agent. He explained, “I've been having a lot of trouble hiring talented programmers, and I'll probably feel less bad about firing a chatbot.”

Notch says he may use AI to create tools he needs to make his upcoming game.

To give you some context of who Notch is. Notch created Minecraft in 2009, which later skyrocketed in popularity, and now stands as one of the most successful games of all time. In 2014, he sold Minecraft and his game studio, Mojang, to Microsoft for $2.5 billion.

In 2024, he founded a new gaming studio, Bitshift Entertainment. Notch is currently working on a game, titled, Levers and Chests. Going by his comments, it seems that the studio has failed to find suitable human talent, and may now be moving more towards AI agents.

This comes at a time when things are tough in the job market. Amazon, Oracle, Meta, and many more companies have laid off thousands of tech workers as they aggressively spend on AI. Microsoft’s Xbox division has also laid off hundreds of game developers as part of wider restructuring. In the gaming world, GTA publisher Take-Two Interactive, and EA Sports have also reportedly laid off staff in recent months.

Vibe coding is inevitable, says Minecraft creator

What makes Notch’s comments more interesting is that just a few days ago, he had shared a post on X that read, “Reject AI.” However, it appears that he is making peace with what he thinks is an inevitable transition for developers.

Just days ago, Notch urged his followers to reject AI.

In a separate post, Notch accepted that he may not like vibe coding, but he had no choice but to adapt to changing times. He added, “Still probably will be grumpy about it for a while, even if it is good, but who am I to resist the inevitable?”

Vibe coding will become the norm, hints Notch.

Notch is not the only one who believes that AI is taking over the coding world. Recently, Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, said that his platform was not anti-AI, and those who did not accept that could just walk away. Previously, Linus had called AI “marketing hype.”

Earlier this year, NodeJS creator Ryan Dahl had claimed that the “era of humans writing code is over.”
