Four relief camps were opened in the district as heavy rain continued on Saturday (August 1, 2026). Seventy people from 13 families were shifted to safer locations.
The camps are functioning at Valiyattiparamba Anganwadi at Manjeri, Cherumann Anganwadi at Edavanna, Ma’dinul Uloom Madrasa at Panakkad and Government Welfare Upper Primary School at Nediyiruppu. Those shifted include 24 men, 22 women, 20 children, and four elderly persons.
A review meeting chaired by District Collector Vinay Goyal assessed the rain situation and instructed departments to complete emergency preparations. The Collector directed officials to ensure basic facilities at the camps.
People living in vulnerable areas have been advised to move to safer places. Residents near rivers, streams and other water bodies have been asked to remain alert and avoid entering water bodies for fishing or bathing.
The District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions in Malappuram, including madrasas and tuition centres, on Sunday (August 2, 2026). The holiday will not apply to examinations scheduled earlier.
The District Disaster Management Authority has opened 24-hour control rooms to handle rain-related emergencies. They are functioning at the district and taluk levels.

Meanwhile, a four-year-old boy drowned after falling into a stream at Neerad near Kondotty on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Adam Ayman, son of Hameed and Nadeera of Nediyiruppu. He fell into the stream near his house and was swept away. Residents rescued him and took him to a hospital, but he died on the way.
