For the past two months, residents of 20th Street at LGGS Colony in Ashok Nagar and surrounding streets have been receiving Metro Water supply irregularly.

Over the last month, the situation worsened considerably, with several streets in the locality receiving no Metro water supply whatsoever. In the last few days, there has been a slight improvement, but the supply is still noticeably below par. From the flow in the taps, one can sense low pressure in the pipelines. On July 31 and August 1, one noticed some activity on the ground, workers employed by CMWSSB digging a trench, as indicated by the photo. As this issue has dragged on for a considerable period of time, we are still registering our grievance, seeking that CMWSSB shore up and expedite whatever remedial work it might have started in the neighbourhood.

Drinking water is a basic necessity, yet residents in this locality have been left without a reliable source for weeks together.

Complaints have been lodged with Metro Water authorities on more than one occasion. Officials have visited the area to assess the situation, but this has not translated into any lasting solution, and regular supply has still not been restored. Soon, residents will be forced to depend on costly private water tankers to meet even their basic daily needs: an unfair financial burden on households, coming on top of the water tax already paid to CMWSSB. The elderly and families with young children are the worst-affected.

The government authorities concerned should look into this matter on priority and arrange for adequate drinking water supply through the proper channels without further delay. Continued neglect of an issue as essential as drinking water is causing genuine and avoidable hardship to the entire community.
