Former West Bengal minister and Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra has come under the Enforcement Directorate's scanner in the alleged municipal recruitment scam. The central probing agency has summoned Mitra to appear for questioning at the CGO Complex in Kolkata at 11 am on July 29.

Before issuing the latest summons, the ED had also asked Mitra's wife, Archana Mitra, and their two sons, Swaroop Mitra and Shubhrup Mitra, to appear on July 22 and 23 with bank documents. According to ED sources, the summons was issued after the agency scrutinised financial transactions in which the names of the family members surfaced.

The ED suspects that several people secured jobs in the Kamarhati and Titagarh municipalities by allegedly paying bribes in cash and gold. Officials said the investigation is based on documentary and financial evidence, and added that no conclusions should be drawn at this stage.

The fresh summons comes after the ED carried out searches on June 13 at multiple premises linked to Mitra and questioned him. The searches covered seven locations in Kolkata and nearby areas, including his residences in Bhawanipur and Kalighat, as well as properties in Dakshineswar, Santoshpur, Joka and Beleghata.

In the municipal recruitment case, Trinamool leader and former Bengal minister Sujit Bose has already been arrested by the ED. The alleged scam relates to irregularities in appointments to various civic bodies in West Bengal and is being investigated by the agency under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act on the basis of predicate offences registered by the CBI. In October 2025, the CBI had also searched Mitra's residence and examined documents for nearly five hours as part of its investigation.

With Mitra now asked to appear before the ED, the investigation has moved from searches and scrutiny of financial records to another round of questioning, while the agency continues to examine the alleged irregularities in civic body recruitment in West Bengal.
