Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali marked his return to competitive football in emphatic fashion, earning the Man of the Match award as Chippa United held Golden Arrows to a goalless draw in their opening fixture of the 2026/27 South African Premier Soccer League season on Saturday.
Making his first competitive appearance in eight months, the 30-year-old produced a commanding display at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium, reminding fans and selectors alike of the qualities that established him as one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers.
According to FotMob, Nwabali finished the match with a 9.1 rating; the highest of any player on the pitch, after making six crucial saves to secure a valuable clean sheet for the Chilli Boys.
The Nigerian shot-stopper only returned to Chippa United last month after previously leaving the club following Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign in Morocco, with both parties agreeing to terminate his contract by mutual consent.

His comeback follows a difficult period off the pitch during which he openly spoke about battling mental health challenges after the heartbreaking loss of both parents.
Against Golden Arrows, however, Nwabali looked every bit the goalkeeper who inspired the Super Eagles to continental success.
Despite Chippa United spending long periods without the ball as Golden Arrows dominated possession and created the better chances, the Nigerian remained unbeatable throughout the contest.
His standout moment came just before the hour mark when he produced a stunning double save to deny Ronaldo Van Neel, preserving parity with a brilliant display of reflexes and positioning.
Beyond his outstanding shot-stopping, Nwabali was instrumental in organising Chippa United’s defensive unit. He marshalled his backline with authority, claimed crosses confidently and reacted sharply to dangerous loose balls inside the penalty area.
His all-round performance included three high claims, three clearances and an impressive 12 ball recoveries, although his passing accuracy of 65 per cent highlighted an area the experienced goalkeeper will look to improve as the season progresses.
Nwabali announced himself on the continental stage during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where his heroics helped Nigeria reach the final of the tournament and saw him displace Francis Uzoho as the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper.
He also did well with the Super Eagles at the AFCON 2025 edition in Morocco where Nigeria won a record-extending bronze medal.
However, his departure from Chippa United and subsequent spell without a club saw him lose his place in the national team to Maduka Okoye.
Saturday’s performance could prove to be a timely reminder to Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle that Nwabali remains a serious contender for the number one jersey ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international assignments.
For Chippa United, who finished just three points above the relegation zone last season, the draw represents a solid start to the new campaign.
The Chilli Boys will now turn their attention to their next league fixture, where they host Richards Bay on 11 August, with Nwabali hoping to build on a dream return between the posts.
