A 57-year-old man from Kanniyakumari was arrested by Tirupattur Town police on Sunday for stealing cash and mobile phones from a series of shops near the bus terminus in town.

The arrested person was identified as R. Vijayakumar. He has criminal cases against him at Kanniyakumari, Puducherry, Madurai, Cuddalore, and Pudukottai police stations. Initial inquiry revealed that victim G. Santhosh, a resident of Rajapalayam village near Tirupattur town, was running a mobile phone outlet near a bus terminus in town.

The police said that on July 28 when Santhosh opened his shop, he found more than 30 high-end mobile phones and cash ₹50,000 missing. He checked CCTV camera footage that was fixed at the entrance of the outlet and found suspect Vijayakumar in the shop the previous night.

Investigation revealed that suspect Vijayakumar had burgled at least 10 shops in town, including a mechanic outlet, grocery shop and a wholesale rice shop on the same day. The police analysed CCTV camera footage on the route. On being informed, a special police team reached the bus terminus and arrested Vijayakumar.
