Like many midlife women I've become slightly obsessed with trying to anti-age my eyes – and I think I might have actually found the secret.
No, it's not a pair of Le Specs sunnies – although they help, and I'd wear them all day if I could. Rather it's something called 'Lids By Design', eyelid correcting strips by a brand called Contours Rx.
Basically, they're little sticky strips designed to act like 'a push-up bra for your eyes' – and I think I might love them as much as I did my Wonderbra in the nineties.
I can't tell you how sceptical I was initially – suffice to say it took me months to get round to trying them – how I wish I'd hurried up. I first found the time to give them a go during a recent family holiday. I had a box of assorted sizes, from 4mm to 7mm and tried a few of them before I settled on 5mm as the sweet spot for me – my eyes were more open, brighter and yes, significantly younger-looking, but it was a subtle lift – no wind-tunnels here.
So, how does it work? You take them out of the box with the plastic tweezers provided, then, using a magnifying mirror, place a strip in your eyelid fold, and kind of jiggle it about until you get it exactly where you need it – and, well, that's it. A bit fiddly, yes, and you don't want to be trying to do it in a rush – but, seriously, it's worth making the time.
After a bit of trial and error I learnt the following. Make sure your skin is fully dry. I tried to stick my first pair on immediately after a swoop of micellar water. Mistake. Patience is all.
Second – those tweezers are there for a reason. Once you've got the hang of the application the strips really can't be seen, but if you scrunch the ends of the tape by diving in with fat fingers, well, expect it to be obvious.
Third, when it comes to placement, go slightly higher than you think you need.
So, I hear you ask, can you really not see them? Well, the reason I first tested them on a family trip in bright sunshine was that if you can expect anyone to spot the fact that you're hoicking up your droopy eyes with bits of fancy sellotape, then surely it's those who know and love your face best – and will definitely find the whole exercise hysterical if they rumble you. Not a peep.
I've worn them several times since and nobody has noticed – but there has always been a compliment. I've had colleagues ask if I've had my hair done (nope), been told my yellow shirt makes me look 'zingy', and had a friend demand the details of my mascara. Blonder, full of fizz and lashes aflutter? Yes, please.
