The Animal Husbandry department said that it has implemented extensive measures to ensure adequate fodder for livestock in Chittoor district despite concerns about the impact of El Nino-induced dry conditions.

Responding to a news report in The Hindu , Joint Director (Animal Husbandry) D. Uma Maheswari on Monday said the department had initiated a comprehensive fodder development programme well in advance to mitigate any possible shortage and strengthen fodder security across the district.

The official said that 472 metric tonnes of improved jowar and AT maize fodder seed have been distributed to eligible livestock farmers under a 75% subsidy programme. The initiative is expected to generate nearly 3.07 lakh metric tonnes of green fodder biomass.

Ms. Uma Maheswari said that 42,519 farmers have also taken up fodder cultivation on 26,698 acres under the Pre-Monsoon Dry Sowing (PDS) programme, which is projected to produce another 1.60 lakh metric tonnes of green fodder. To improve fodder utilisation and reduce wastage, 1,317 chaff cutters have been supplied to farmers at 50% subsidy.

The Joint Director said that an action plan extending up to May 2027 has been prepared to enhance fodder security further. The programme includes distribution of additional improved fodder seed, awareness campaigns encouraging farmers to earmark at least 10% of cultivable land for fodder crops, promotion of intercropping in orchards, and effective utilisation of crop residues as cattle feed.

The official highlighted that village-level teams have commenced door-to-door surveys from Monday to assess fodder availability, identify local requirements and guide farmers on community fodder development.
