Despite the Cauvery remaining largely dry, people thronged the famous Amma Mandapam bathing ghat at Srirangam here to celebrate the Aadi Perukku and perform rituals associated with the festival on Monday.

Aadi Perukku is celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month Aadi with many newly-wed couples and other devotees offering special prayers and performing rituals at the bathing ghat to celebrate the festival.

With the river remaining largely dry in view of the poor flow, many devotees walked on the dry bed from the bathing ghat to a distance where there was scarce water flow to perform rituals at that spot.

People could not take the traditional holy dip at the bathing ghat on the day of the festival which they usually do when there is copious flow of water before performing the rituals. The Tiruchi Corporation had installed water sprinklers at the bathing ghat to spray water on the devotees.

Amma Mandapam bathing was buzzing with activity since morning. A posse of police personnel was deployed to maintain order. Barricades were placed to regulate the movement of people proceeding towards the bathing ghat and coming out of it.

The Ayyalamman bathing ghat, Thillainayagam bathing ghat and at the Odathurai ghat also attracted a number of devotees in Tiruchi city. However, the turnout at the bathing ghats was smaller than what was witnessed last year in view of the poor flow of water, said police sources.
