After a tremendous weekend at the box office, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is coming to IMAX in North America starting on Aug. 6. The Odyssey’s exclusive lock on the format is ending, but Nolan’s similarly successful blockbuster will remain in select IMAX theaters as well. Either way, Tom Holland fans will be seeing the star in high-fidelity.
Brand New Day has opened to a massive $360 million domestic haul, giving it the biggest opening weekend ever in the United States. The film's $927 million global opening is second all-time only behind Avengers: Endgame's $1.22 billion. Between the new Spider-Man and The Odyssey (which has made $911.4 million worldwide), the two films powered the biggest weekend in domestic box office history with over $430 million combined.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has struggled at times in recent years, with several Phase 5 movies like Thunderbolts and The Marvels coming in under expectations, Spider-Man films have proven reliable at the box office. Spider-Man: No Way Home made almost $2 billion, a figure that ranks only behind Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War for MCU films. Before that, Spider-Man: Far From Home* broke a billion.
The success of films like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey has put this year’s domestic box office on track to break $10 billion for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic. The domestic box office is currently at over $6 billion. Toy Story 5 is currently the highest-grossing film in the U.S., although Spider-Man: Brand New Day will almost certainly catch up. This pair of successful movies is a needed win for Disney, which recently suffered box office bombs like the live-action Moana and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
As for IMAX, it’s coming off its best year in history, making $1.28 billion at the global box office in 2025. It seems like the company will surpass that figure given that The Odyssey has become the fastest film to make $200 million in IMAX. The ultra-high resolution IMAX 70mm version of Nolan's epic has made headlines for inspiring long journeys, representing 12% of the film’s total IMAX box office despite only being shown in 41 locations worldwide. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day coming to IMAX, it seems likely that the format will continue to drive audiences to the theater.
