SEOUL, Aug. 4 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co.'s Galaxy Z foldable smartphones set a new preorder record in South Korea, the company said Tuesday.

The company received a total of 1.44 million orders for products in its latest foldable smartphone lineup, which includes the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8.

The phones, powered by Alphabet Inc.'s Gemini artificial intelligence (AI), are designed to offer devices tailored to different user lifestyles, along with more personalized AI experience, according to the company.

The latest presales tally topped the previous record from the Galaxy Note 10 in 2019, which booked 1.38 million orders.

The early sales period for the Galaxy Z series ran from Wednesday to Monday.

Samsung attributed the popularity of the Galaxy Z series to its advanced foldable phone technology, growing consumer preference for its new form factors and various consumer benefits offered during the presales period.

The new foldable phone lineup will be gradually released in some 100 countries starting Friday.
