Centre for Liberty chairman and former IPS officer A.B. Venkateswara Rao said the developments that have emerged in the Kadambari Jethwani case raise serious questions about the functioning of law enforcement and investigative agencies.

Addressing the media in Vijayawada on Tuesday, Mr. Venkateswara Rao claimed that the first criminal case registered against doctor-turned-actor Kadambari Jethwani was entirely fabricated. He alleged that the remand reports and other official documents submitted by the CID before the court establish that the documents relied upon in that case were forged and backdated.

He said that despite these findings, filing a fresh chargesheet against Ms. Jethwani by relying on the very same documents, allegations, and witnesses is contrary to the principles of justice and exposes serious inconsistencies within the investigative process. He further pointed out that Ms. Jethwani had informed the court that the case against her was intended to compel her to withdraw a case relating to a prominent industrialist in Mumbai.

However, the CID failed to conduct any meaningful investigation into that crucial allegation, choosing instead to ignore the root cause of the dispute and pursue only selective aspects of the case, he alleged. He also highlighted several contradictions between the chargesheet, bank transactions, forensic reports and witness statements.

The Centre for Liberty urged the government to order a comprehensive, impartial investigation into all the issues that have emerged in the Kadambari Jethwani case and to initiate appropriate legal action against those found responsible.
