Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, on Tuesday, said Leader of Opposition. Udhayanidhi Stalin’s approach of employing a “double entendre” during his speech at a protest held to demand Tamil Nadu’s rights over Cauvery water in Thanjavur, was “inappropriate” and not befitting the post he held.

In a statement, Mr. Thirumavalavan added the State government would earn the goodwill among the public if it chooses not to imprison Mr Udhayanidhi Stalin, with the Budget Session in the State Assembly set to commence from August 5. He further said, “Under the present circumstances, such a course of action would also help create an environment in which all political parties and the general public can jointly raise their voice in support of Tamil Nadu's rights over Cauvery water and draw the attention of the Union Government of India to the issue.”

The VCK leader said, “While stating the Chief Minister's focus was only on filing false cases against the opposition, those gathered at the venue shouted the name of a popular actress. In response, in an apparent attempt at sarcasm, he made a remark that carried an inappropriate double meaning. The issue has now escalated into a national controversy, with English-language media debating and condemning the comment.”

“The tendency to tailor one's words to suit the tastes of the crowd should be abandoned. Speaking in an emotionally charged manner is inappropriate. The approach that created an impression of belittling womanhood deserves condemnation,” he said.
