The Public Works Department (PWD) has assessed the damage to roads, bridges, and causeways in the recent rain spell at ₹50 crore. The exact extent of the damage can be assessed only after the floodwaters completely recede in the worst-affected areas, PWD Minister P.K. Basheer said on Tuesday.

The Minister said the roads and bridges damaged by rain, floods, and landslides would be made motorable at the earliest. The Minister, who convened a meeting of officials and District Collectors on Tuesday, directed the officials to take steps to provide speedy assistance to the public.

Funds would not be an issue for emergency works, as the Chief Minister had extended full support for the efforts, he said.

The Minister said the worst damage had been reported in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts. Roads, bridges and canals had suffered damage in several other districts, including Malappuram. Parts of the Thiruvalla-Ambalappuzha highway, M.C. Road, Erattupetta-Wagamon road, and the Alappuzha-Changanassery road had been submerged in floodwaters at several places.

In Kannur, bridges and causeways, including Palappura, Vattiyamthode and Manikadavu Chappath, were submerged. A landslip at Chekkuthan Thodu, near Palchuram, in Kannur blocked the road. A similar case was reported in Idukki also. There were widespread traffic disruptions and waterlogging in low-lying areas and along riverbanks.

Public Works Secretary Adeela Abdulla, Chief Engineers, and other officials attended the meeting held online.
