Transpower expecting record electricity demand in cold snap

It told power generators on Monday there could be potential shortfalls on Wednesday morning and evening and again on Thursday morning.

Transpower executive general manager operations Chantelle Bramley told RNZ the industry responded to that notice.

"We're monitoring the situation closely and the industry has responded as anticipated to resolve potential low residuals across the peak morning and evening periods on Wednesday," she said.

"We are continuing to liaise with the industry to ensure there is enough generation being offered to meet what is forecast to be record electricity demand through the rest of the week."

Bramley said Monday's notice was made "to ensure the electricity industry was aware of the potential for a tight balance between supply and demand during this cold snap. These notices are part of our standard operating process."

She said Transpower was not expecting any impact on electricity supply for consumers.

"If the situation tightens further across the coming days we will issue additional notices as per established procedures with industry," she said.
