One of the biggest surprises at the box office this summer is the performance of Minions & Monsters. To date, it has grossed about $450 million worldwide, including about $170 million in the U.S. Which, by most metrics, would be fantastic. But this is the Minions. The last two Minions movies each grossed over a billion worldwide and well over $300 million domestically. So, basically, this is performing half as well as its predecessors. Not ideal.

What that probably means is parents are waiting for the film to come home so their kids can watch it over and over. And now, we know when that’s happening. Universal just announced that Minions & Monsters will be available for digital download on August 11 ahead of a physical media release on September 18. Both come with almost an hour of bonus features, which you can read about below.

Before that, though, why do we think Minions & Monsters underperformed so far below the other two films? Could it be something as simple as the word “Monsters” in the title? Maybe parents didn’t want to spend money going to a theater worried their kids might be scared? Or could it be that kids didn’t quite grasp or care about the film’s premise, which involved the Minions bouncing through Hollywood history? Because of that premise, reviews were by far the best in the franchise’s history. Maybe making something critics connected to hurt the perception as a whole.

Whatever the case, we are sure parents will be seeking this one out at home when it arrives next week. No word yet on a streaming date, but we have to guess it’ll be on Peacock probably in time for the holidays.
