The student union elections in Madhya Pradesh’s educational institutions are slated to be held in September, after a gap of nine years, the State Government has told the High Court.

On Monday (August 3), the government shared the academic calendar of 2026-27 with a Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Vivek Rusia and Justice Pradeep Mittal in Jabalpur, in which student body polls are schedules for September.

The High Court was hearing two petitions filed in 2024 and 2025 that sought that elections be conducted in colleges and universities.

Student body elections in the State’s higher education institutions were last held in 2017, with a petition alleging that lack of student unions has affected the democratic representation of students.

“The State Government has filed a reply along with the Academic Calendar for the academic session 2026–27. In the said Academic Calendar, the month of September 2026 has been fixed for conducting the Student Body Elections (Chhatra Sangathan),” the court order read, while disposing the pleas.

The court also directed the State authorities and various public universities of Madhya Pradesh to hold the elections in every college.

Meanwhile, various universities sought directions for the State authorities to ensure adequate police arrangements for the elections. The court said that each college or university could read out to the district administration and local police for security measures.

State’s Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar said that his department is examining the court’s directions and a decision will be taken soon.

“The Court has issued certain directions regarding the student union elections. Our department is examining them, and I have discussed the matter with the Chief Minister. We will take a decision soon,” Mr. Parmar said, speaking to reporters in capital Bhopal.

During the previous hearing on July 15, the government had told that the 2026-27 academic calendar was under preparations and that provisions will be made for student body polls.
