Netflix’s Best New Show Has A Perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score

Netflix has been investing more and more in Korean content over time, and there’s a good reason for that. Well past Squid Game, extremely high-quality content has emerged from the country to land as hits, critically, viewership-wise or both. Now, that’s happened again with a new 100% Rotten Tomatoes-scored show.

The series is The East Palace,currently sitting at #10 on Netflix’s top 10 list. The show has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes critic score, and now that audience scores are coming in as well, it has a 90% there too.

The East Palace focuses on two characters: a man who walks the spirit world and slays demons and a woman who hears the dead, who are ordered to the king’s palace in order to solve a supernatural mystery there and unravel the place’s “dark secrets.”

The 8-episode series is not just performing well on Rotten Tomatoes, but over on IMDB as well, where no episode sits below an 8.1/10, really fantastic given the context of scores on that site.

Star Nam Joo-hyuk is no stranger to TV, having appeared in dozens of episodes across shows like Vigilante (no, not the movie), Twenty Five Twenty One, Start-Up, The Light In Your Eyes, The Bride of Habaek, Who Are You and many more. His co-star, Roh Yoon-seo, has a shorter resume, but has appeared in well-reviewed series like The Frog, Crash Course in Romance and Our Blues. Both appearing in a show this high-profile on Netflix may be the most eyes the two have had on a project to date.

The show is set in Joseon-era Korea, which is a wide-spanning window of time for the nation, from 1392 to 1897, though the show seems to lean on the earlier side of that.

The East Palace is not based on a book or comic or webtoon or anything like that; rather, it's an original TV production. It is also listed as a limited series, meaning that there will not be a second season as the story ends conclusively. Given how Netflix often cancels series after cliffhanger season 1s, this might be best for everyone involved, really.

While it’s possible it rises in the ranks, The East Palace may also fall off the top 10 entirely, and may no longer catch the eye of many browsers. But consider this a reminder that this is the best-reviewed new show on Netflix right now, higher than Little House on the Prairie and way, way, way above The Hawk, though I suppose you couldn’t find more disparate programming.
