Food Expo vendors hoping for tasty profits with caviar sake gelato, other new products

Abalone for HK$1, handcrafted caviar mooncakes and discounted coffee and milk tea packs among products at next week’s Food Expo

Some vendors at Hong Kong’s coming Food Expo have said they expect brisker sales and higher foot traffic compared with last year, citing better weather, discounts and creative products such as caviar sake gelato.

The five day expo is among five trade fairs that will open next Thursday, with more than 1,850 exhibitors in total from over 30 countries and regions, according to organiser the Trade Development Council.

Smilely Lam Yuk-fung, associate executive director of the council, said on Wednesday that the participation of international food companies showed the city’s strength as a culinary capital and platform to enter overseas markets.

“Hong Kong has always leveraged its unique advantages as an international food trading hub,” she said.

“By serving as a ‘superconnector’ and ‘super value-adder’, we bring the world’s most innovative and high-quality food products to Hong Kong, and the Greater Bay Area, which then radiates out to the rest of Asia, while actively helping top-tier food products from mainland China go global.”

Lam said vendors from Brunei and East Timor would debut at this year’s expo, marking the first time all 11 countries of Asean would take part. Exhibitors from Greece and Colombia will also make their debut.
