The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested eight suspects in connection with the violent unrest that erupted at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area, claiming the lives of two people and leaving another injured.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying the arrests followed sustained intelligence-led operations aimed at tracking down those involved in the disturbances.

According to the statement, the crisis began on July 26 following a misunderstanding between a soldier, Nura Bashir, and a 25-year-old man, Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim, of Miga Local Government Area, at the market.

During the altercation, the soldier allegedly stabbed Biniya with a knife. The victim was rushed to a medical facility, where he was later confirmed dead by a doctor.

The police said the incident triggered widespread violence as hoodlums allegedly attacked a police station, fired bows and arrows at security personnel, and set two thatched shops ablaze in the market.

The command said two suspects, Muhammed Muhammed, 22, of Gagarawa Local Government Area, and Faridu Mohammed, were arrested for allegedly participating in the attack, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing accomplices.

The statement added that, in a related incident on August 2, six additional suspects were arrested for allegedly attacking two vigilante members with sticks and cutlasses during the same unrest.

One of the vigilante members died from injuries sustained in the attack, while the second victim is receiving treatment at a medical facility.

Those arrested in connection with the assault were identified as Isiyaku Abdulkarim, 55; Yahaya Habu, 31; Ibrahim Abubakar, 30; Audu Mamman Janare, 30; Ya’u Duga, 65; and Mamman Musa, 20, all from Taura, Gagarawa, Kaugama and Jahun Local Government Areas.

The police also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the violence.

SP Adam said investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incidents and ensure that all those involved were brought to justice.

He further disclosed that a stakeholder engagement involving Miyetti Allah leaders, community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, youth representatives and other relevant groups was under way to address the root causes of the Gujungu Market crisis and prevent a recurrence.

The Commissioner of Police commended officers and other security stakeholders for their professionalism and swift response in containing the disturbances.

He assured residents that the command remained committed to protecting lives and property and would deal decisively with anyone found engaging in criminal activities.

The command urged members of the public to remain calm, remain law-abiding, and continue supporting the police with timely and credible information to aid ongoing investigations and enhance public safety.
