The Annamayya district administration has called for a series of coordinated measures to strengthen road safety and reduce fatalities, with a focus on accident-prone junctions where rural roads connect with National and State highways.

In-charge District Collector Shiv Narayan Sharma, who chaired the District Road Safety Committee meeting here on Wednesday, directed officials to expedite the installation of speed breakers, warning signboards and streetlights at vulnerable locations. “Of the 236 sites identified across Annamayya district, safety measures have been completed at 108 spots. Work at the remaining 128 locations should be completed on a priority basis,” he said.

During the meeting, the officials reviewed progress at 18 identified black spots, noting that safety interventions have been completed at 11 locations. The in-charge Collector instructed the police to install speed detection cameras wherever required and launch joint enforcement drives with the Transport department against vehicles fitted with illegal modified silencers.

The police officials informed the Collector that road accidents had declined by nearly 20% between January and May compared to the corresponding period last year, but the number of crashes increased during June and July. Overspeeding, reckless overtaking, heavy vehicle movement, and tractors operating without reflective tapes or warning lights, were cited as the primary causes.

Mr. Shiv Narayan Sharma directed the officials to enforce helmet compliance among two-wheeler riders, improve street lighting in villages, remove traffic bottlenecks caused by encroachments and ensure prompt emergency medical care for accident victims.

“We will also prepare proposals for a trauma care centre near Madanapalle and alternative traffic arrangements to ease congestion around the bustling tomato market,” the in-charge Collector said.
