The surprising success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the fourth movie to star Tom Holland as the titular character, continued Wednesday as the movie became the highest-grossing film at the box office so far this year, topping “Toy Story 5” just seven days after its release.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has earned $1.10 billion worldwide as of Wednesday, edging just slightly ahead of the $1.07 billion “Toy Story 5” earned in its theatrical run earlier this year.

The movie also now holds the records for the highest-grossing Monday in history with $46 million (beating a “Black Panther” record) and the highest-grossing Tuesday (beating its 2019 predecessor "Spider-Man: Far From Home”).

The latest installment in the Marvel franchise has also overtaken a number of records previously held by “Avengers: Endgame,” including the all-time domestic opening weekend record at $360 million (beating “Endgame's” record of $357.1 million) and the all-time domestic preview record with $74.5 million (topping Endgame's $60 million).

The new “Spider-Man” film delivered the biggest ever global weekend for AMC Theaters in both overall box office and concessions revenues, Deadline reported, with a circuit record of 10.2 million admissions.

“Spider-Man” now owns the all-time opening records in more than a dozen countries including France, India, Brazil, Spain, Peru, Colombia, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Turkey Ecuador and Belgium.

And while "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" was expected to be a box office hit, its domination has taken even studio executives by surprise. Producer and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Variety he "did not expect 'Endgame’s' (domestic) record to be beat, but I couldn’t be happier." WHAT TO WATCH FOR

If Holland reprises the role. Neither he nor Marvel have confirmed “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is the end of the Holland era, but he’s also not confirmed to don the mask in any other upcoming films. Rumors persist that he'll appear in "Avengers: Doomsday" later this year or "Avengers: Secret Wars" in 2027. Holland has discussed eventual plans for passing the character's torch to another actor and said he has a “really clear vision” for the end of his time as Spider-Man. He’s also said he’ll play the character for as long as the studio wants him.
