Fox News host Sean Hannity refused to believe a recent poll from his own conservative network that puts progressive Democrat James Talarico slightly in front of Republican Ken Paxton in Texas’s highly competitive Senate race ahead of November’s midterms.

Hannity brushed off the results of the Fox News poll from July 30 while debating with former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio Tuesday about the Democratic Socialists of America platform.

The survey of 1,006 registered Texas voters revealed that Talarico, who is not a member of the Democratic Socialists of America but considered more progressive than others in the establishment wing of the party, has a 3-point lead over Paxton.

“Did you read your own poll today where Talarico is beating Paxton?” De Blasio asked on Hannity.

“I don’t believe it for two seconds,” Hannity responded.

Hannity, a close ally to President Donald Trump, went on a tangent about Talarico’s gender inclusivity policies, invoking familiar conservative complaints about transgender rights and the recognition of gender fluidity.

The Fox News host took particular issue with Talarico’s past claim that “God is nonbinary.”

Hannity, Trump and other conservatives have sought to characterize Talarico and other progressive Democrats as communists, in an effort to steer voters away. That effort has ramped up after a series of high-profile progressive candidates won their primaries, including Talarico.

“But Sean, that’s not what people are voting on,” de Blasio interjected. “They’re voting on what’s happening to their families, and they can’t make ends meet.”

Hannity disagreed with de Blasio’s assessment, believing Talarico’s ideology is too extreme to connect with moderate voters. Mediaite was the first to report on Hannity’s comments.

Fox News’s poll found that 63 percent of moderate voters were leaning toward Talarico over Paxton.

Talarico, a state lawmaker and former school teacher, entered the national spotlight by preaching unity and change through the lens of his progressive Christian beliefs. His campaign beat out incumbent Democrat Jasmine Crockett and is now preparing to take on Paxton.

Although Republicans have asserted Talarico is radical, most respondents to the Fox News poll found that Talarico was “not very” or “not at all” extreme.

Meanwhile, nearly 60 percent of those surveyed believe Paxton lacks the personal character to serve as a senator.

Other polls show Talarico narrowly leading Paxton or neck-and-neck with him.

A June New York Times/Siena College poll found both Talarico and Paxton at 47 percent. Another survey from the Barbara Jordan Public Policy and Research Center, conducted in July, found Talarico has a narrow 2 percentage point lead over Paxton.
