The hippopotamus population at the Bannerughatta Biological Park (BBP) has increased to five with the birth of a hippopotamus calf.

BBP officials said Dashya, aged around 17 years, gave birth to a hippopotamus calf on May 27.

“Since birth, both mother and calf have been under continuous observation by the animal care team. Considering the importance of the early post-parturition period, the enclosure is being managed with minimum disturbance to provide a calm environment for the animals. Measures have been taken to reduce stress and support natural maternal behaviour, thereby promoting the healthy growth and development of the calf,” officials said.

It added that preliminary observations indicate that the calf is healthy and responding normally, while Dashya continues to exhibit strong maternal instincts and attentive care towards her offspring.

The mother and calf are now open for public viewing.
