Sydney Towle, an influencer who has documented her journey with rare bile duct cancer for years, has been moved into hospice care, according to her brother.

In a TikTok shared Tuesday, Austin Towle said that Sydney, 26, is “surrounded by her friends and family” as she transitions to care focused on comfort instead of aggressively treating her cholangiocarcinoma, which she was diagnosed with about three years ago.

Austin’s post shared a picture of Sydney’s loved ones gathered by her hospital bed and wrote, “Sydney has been moved to hospice and is surrounded by her friends and family. Thank you all for your love and support.”

The post’s caption simply said, “Thank you so much. Your love and support does not go unnoticed.”

Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare disease, with about 8,000 people receiving diagnoses in the U.S. each year, according to the American Cancer Society. Because of the nature of the cancer, it is often detected after the tumors are too advanced to be removed.

Two weeks ago, Sydney shared to her 1.1 million TikTok followers that she was preparing to take on the next phase of a clinical trial involving tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte therapy.

As the demanding nature of her cancer treatment has stopped Sydney from sharing her usual video content from the hospital, Austin has shared frequent updates on his sister using his own TikTok account, which has more than 90,000 followers.

Last month, he said that Sydney was “doing okay” and went for a walk while she was in the hospital.

In a July 21 update from Sydney, she said from her hospital bed: “It feels weird hearing myself talk because I feel like a different person at this point just because I’ve been on so much pain medication and other stuff.”

“I’m not going to lie, every day is extremely challenging with the pain that I am constantly experiencing, but I have hope that I can do this,” she added. “Every day it’s just me taking it day by day. Just keep swimming, I’m just happy to be here.”

In May, Sydney shared a video with her mother where she explained that her oncologist recommended transitioning to end-of-life care, which she refused, saying, “We are not at the point where we’re giving up.”

Sydney wrote on her Instagram at the time, “My rope is not finished yet. I am tying more on with the love of my family and friends and we will move on. Continuing to advocate for myself and for others who aren’t able to. Continuing to find solutions that are outside of the box and that may not seem like the straight, or even right, path forward. Because you never know unless you try.”
