Whether at home or abroad, kicking back with a cold pint is considered a necessity by many Britons.

But among the gripes of beer lovers the world over is the staggering cost of a pint, which has soared in recent years.

Now, the cheapest – and most expensive – places for beer globally have been revealed in Deutsche Bank's 2026 Mapping of the World's Prices.

The report also looks at the priciest spots for a whole host of everyday essentials, from rent to jeans, cigarettes to food.

It also includes the 'Oasis Index', which combines the average cost of five beers and two packs of cigarettes.

Melbourne, at $111.20 (£82), is the world's most expensive city in this category, with Sydney second.

And for just domestic beer, the places with the highest average cost for a 0.5l bottle are not dissimilar.

At the top of the list, with the most expensive prices, is Melbourne, Australia.

In second place is Singapore, followed by Sydney in third.

Rounding out the top five are Tel Aviv in Israel and Helsinki in Finland

Birmingham is the UK's highest-ranked city, in sixth.

Perhaps surprisingly, London only comes in 11th place on the list.

On the other end of the scale, the cheapest places have been revealed too, with Shanghai taking the top spot.

Also in China, Beijing scoops up the silver medal, with Frankfurt, Germany taking home the third-place prize.

Other notably cheap destinations in the top five are Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Prague, Czechia.

SHANGHAI

Shanghai tops the ranking as the world's cheapest place for beer in 2026

Perhaps not the first city that comes to mind as a budget destination, Shanghai actually ranks on the list as the cheapest place for a 0.5l bottle, with an average price of $0.90 (67p).

Try 8 Pints, which has locations around the city, or enjoy a budget-friendly convenience store cocktail.

Even if the drinks here don't quite come in under a pound, they can go for around the £3 mark - still a great deal.

BEIJING

Beijing takes second place, another Chinese city with cheap beer

The second city in China to make the cheap list is Beijing, with the Deutsche Bank study highlighting 2026 prices of around $0.96 (70p).

Slow Boat Brewery Taproom is a highlight, while Great Leap is especially trendy.

One review reads: 'Absolutely loved this place. After running around and try all sorts of local experiences, one just wants to kick back and have a good beer. And that's just what this place does. Good staff, speaks English too. Excellent crowd.'

FRANKFURT

Frankfurt came in third place in the analysis, taking home the bronze medal

Few places are as synonymous with a love of beer as Germany - and it turns out Frankfurt is the cheapest spot to enjoy one.

Prices for a domestic 0.5l bottle of beer are $1.16 (86p), according to the study.

The city has fewer pubs than the capital, Berlin, or Munich – but is undoubtedly cheaper than them.

RIO DE JANEIRO

Rio de Janeiro, known for its scenery and vibrant lifestyle, took the fourth spot

Rio's a real party city - and beer goes for as little as $1.18 (90p).

Enjoy a 'chopp' (draft beer) at local spots such as Bar e Restaurante Urca and Bohemia, or local favourite Pavão Azul in Copacabana.

Hocus Pocus DNA is a trendy new spot, with one review saying: 'I went to the Botafogo neighborhood just to check out this brewery, and it was totally worth it! The beers are exceptional, each one better than the last, the burgers are great, and the service is excellent!'

PRAGUE

Prague takes fifth place on the ranking, with fun beer-related activities to enjoy

Rounding out the list is European favourite Prague, with beer from $1.19 (91p).

It's famous for its cheap beer and, as a result, popularity for stag weekends - but is great for any beer lovers.

Classic spots include Tretter's New York Bar and Hemingway Bar in the old town, but Vinohradský Pivovar is a great craft brewery and beer hall.

One visitor wrote: 'Probably my favourite brewery bar in Prague. Such a cool space. I sat upstairs. Which I would recommend over downstairs as it was quieter. I also preferred the space. The beers were tasty and the food was gourmet. Think gastro pub vibes! Loved it.'
