Jockey Tim Clark hopes an overdue rails draw for Gangsta Granny will help him build on a flying start to the season at Randwick on Saturday.

Clark had a winning treble at Rosehill last Saturday with Steel Strike ($8), Carbonados ($15) and Funshow ($13) to kick the season off in style and add to his 40th birthday celebrations.

“It was good to get a few winners to start the season off well, but it was just one day so hopefully we can just continue the momentum into the spring,” Clark said.

“We had a get-together with family and really enjoyed it. Hopefully we’ve got something to celebrate after this Saturday.”

He has a strong book of rides at Randwick, including Gangsta Granny ($3.80) in the feature group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m).

Clark has raced the Michael, John and Wayne Hawkes-trained mare once, when she was less than a length away third to Stefi Magnetica in the $2 million Invitation last October.

Gangsta Granny has not missed a place in 12 starts, which include five wins - two at group 3 level. She maintained that record last autumn despite double-figure barriers at three starts, all in group races.

Clark welcomed the draw in gate one and the chance to get back on Gangsta Granny, which he took to a trial win a week ago.

“She ran really well when I rode her in the Invitation, she didn’t quite get the best of luck there, but she tried really hard,” Clark said.

“She’s very consistent and just gives her all every time. She’s been really well placed by the Hawkes and I think she’s in well under the set weights and penalties in this race, so really looking forward to riding her from the nice draw.”

Clark faces a tougher task from the draw with a Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained pair he knows well.

Champagne Hero, a $3.90 favourite in the fifth, was a last-start winner for Clark on the Kensington track after a gun rails run behind the leaders from gate one. He will have to overcome a draw in 13 and a rise in grade over the mile on Saturday.

Watson, a $2.90 favourite for the last on Saturday, led all the way for Zac Wadick last start over 1200m at Canterbury after crossing from gate eight. Clark, who has won on the gelding, will have gate 10 to contend with for another 1200m race.

Clark did not believe the draw would be a problem for Watson.

“It’s definitely not an ideal gate, to have a good run from that start,” he said of Champagne Hero’s task.

“But it was a nice, confidence-boosting win last start and he’s returned well. If he can get some luck early, it looks a nice race for him. His chances will probably hinge on what happens the first 200-300 metres.

“It’s only the one turn from the 1200m, so that draw for Watson is probably not as big a disadvantage. Being out there, he will roll forward.”

Magenta Skies ($5) in race three and Amazing Eagle ($4) in the sixth are other hopes for Clark.
