A significant police response unfolded in Dargaville this evening after a reported firearm sighting.

Police said they responded to the sighting on Ranfurly St about 6.45pm.

Locals reported seeing more than 10 police cars heading towards the area, along with the Eagle helicopter.

One person was later taken into custody.
