The Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS), under the Justice Ministry, conducted an autopsy on the body of popular travel YouTuber Hlun Solo on Thursday and found that heart failure could be a cause while poison has not been ruled out.

The autopsy was carried out after the body of Bowornthat Pengsuk, better known as Hlun Solo, aged 27, was returned to Thailand on Thursday morning.

After the autopsy, CIFS deputy director Dr Worawee Waiyawut said the examination found no signs of assault and no major internal organ problems but did reveal a slight abnormality in the heart that might have caused heart failure.

He said the second autopsy in Thailand had some limitations because the condition of the body had changed and blood was unavailable. Blood tests can detect poison and evidence of gas inhalation. The institute has requested blood-test information from authorities in Georgia, where the first autopsy was conducted, he added.

At this stage, the Thai institute has not ruled out poisoning. There was no food residue or abnormality in the stomach, though a small amount of food was found in the initial section of the intestine. Samples were collected for substance testing, and results will be available later, Dr Worawee said.

The institute is also conducting a thorough analysis of the deceased’s hair to check for drugs. Initially there was no trace of drugs, but in-depth results are expected in a few weeks.

The Thai forensic institute will also investigate whether the deceased had any genetic condition that could have led to Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS). Officials will complete genetic testing to seek an answer, he said.

In Thursday’s autopsy, officials could not determine the possibility of coronary artery disease because Georgia had removed the arteries for examination, Dr Worawee said.

The forensic physician said that he hopes to obtain from Georgia the conditions of the place of death, blood-test results on possible poisoning and findings from vital organ examinations.

He also said Hlun Solo’s relatives were reasonably satisfied with the results of Thursday’s autopsy.

Separately, the CIFS said on Thursday afternoon there were no wounds or any indication of physical assault on the body. A computed tomography (CT) scan did not show any broken bones or signs of fatal violence.

According to the institute, the body had undergone an autopsy in Georgia and been treated with formalin, which can affect tests for poison and some other substances in a second autopsy. The institute reiterated that poison has not been ruled out pending the results of relevant examinations.

The vlogger was reportedly found dead in a hotel room in Tbilisi, Georgia, on July 14. Police there confirmed the death on July 29, two days after the family issued a public appeal for information about his whereabouts.

The family said they had not heard from Bowornthat since July 13, shortly after he arrived in the Caucasus nation to gather material for one of his popular solo budget-travel features.
