Ball betting turns deadly: Danao man, 30, stabbed dead with icepick

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — What started out as a ball bet ended with a death.

A 30-year-old died after he was stabbed with an icepick amid a conflict following a basketball match in Barangay Población, Danao City, on Wednesday evening, August 5, 2026.

The victim was identified as alias Chris, 30, a resident of E. Oliver Street, Barangay Poblacion, while the suspect was identified as alias Nick, 27, also a resident of the said place.

Personnel from the Provincial Hospital in Danao City reported the incident to the Danao City Police Station, and they immediately responded and verified the report.

Based on the initial investigation, before the incident, the suspect and the victim met at the basketball match. Alias Chris served as the referee in the match.

Downhill from an argument

After the game, the suspect confronted the victim regarding their bet in the basketball match.

They had a heated argument, which resulted in a fistfight after the suspect kicked the victim.

Suddenly, the suspect pulled an icepick that was around 19 centimeters long, and he stabbed the victim on the left side of his body.

After the incident, the suspect immediately fled.

Currently, the police are conducting a hot pursuit operation against the suspect.

In a separate incident at the start of August, a 21-year-old college student was fatally stabbed by her ex-boyfriend inside a boarding house in Barangay Poblacion, Sibonga, Cebu.

The victim was declared dead at the scene, while the suspect, who allegedly stabbed himself after the attack, survived and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

In an interview on Saturday, Police Major Michael G. Calaurian, chief of Sibonga Municipal Police Station, said the incident happened after the suspect went to the victim’s boarding house to reconcile with the victim and ask her to get back together.
