Cordova shooting: Man dies amid armed encounter with cops

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — A 31-year-old man died in an armed encounter with the police in Sitio Tomoy, Barangay Ibabao, Cordova town, on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, around 11:00 p.m.

The suspect was identified as alias “Balot,” a resident of Sitio Bankal of the said barangay.

The Cordova Municipal Police Station had received a report from a concerned citizen regarding the presence of an armed person in the aforementioned place.

The concerned citizen described the suspect as wearing a black sleeveless shirt and dirty white short pants.

The police immediately responded, and upon their arrival in the area, they saw the suspect who fit the description.

When Alias Balot noticed the presence of the police, he immediately hid in an abandoned house, and he shot the responding police using an unknown caliber of revolver.

The police retaliated, and they neutralized the suspect.

Dead on arrival

They brought the suspect to Mactan Doctor’s Hospital in Lapu-Lapu City for immediate medical treatment; however, he was declared dead upon arrival by the attending physician.

Based on the investigation of the police, the suspect was allegedly responsible for a shooting incident in Sitio Bankal, Barangay Ibabao, Cordova on July 12, 2026, around 11:50 a.m.

The incident resulted in the death of a certain alias “Jojo,” 28, a resident of Barangay Buaya, Lapu-Lapu City.

Alias Balot was facing murder charges at the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office due to the said incident.

Authorities also recovered from the crime scene the firearm used by the suspect with four live ammunition and two sachets of alleged illegal drugs that were turned over to the custody of the Regional Forensic Unit in Central Visayas.
