Samsung's Z Fold 8 Ultra crease is getting visibly worse, and it's only two weeks old

Ask any foldable skeptic why they're not on board with foldable phones, and the answer is almost always durability.

Their minds are not likely to be changed by these most recent reports from an X leaker. According to him, the crease on the Z Fold 8 Ultra is getting worse far faster than one of its competitors.

But the competition seems to be doing it better

The folds, that's what it does. But that fold means the display has to fold somewhere, and that somewhere is the notorious screen crease.

Samsung has worked hard to make the Z Fold's screen crease less obvious with each iteration, and on the whole it's done a good job, using the strengths of Ultra Thin Glass to make a screen that can bend without breaking.

However, leaker Alvin on X has highlighted that the Z Fold 8 Ultra's crease is holding up quite badly when compared to the (very slightly) older .

It's quite striking how much deeper and more obvious the Z Fold 8 Ultra's crease is, and it's shocking to learn there's such a gulf in age too — two weeks old, vs four months old.

It's tempting to blame the Z Fold 8 Ultra's new hinge for this, given it has a wider gap that makes opening it easier, but it's important to note we don't know exactly how much each device has been used, so this can't be used as definitive proof of some sort of defect on Samsung's part.

For instance, we don't know whether the Find N6 has spent the majority of those four months open in a drawer. It's probably fair to assume the Z Fold 8 Ultra has been getting a thorough workout in the last two weeks, given it's part of the "it" phone range right now.

You can also add the fact the N6 has "self-healing memory glass technology" for the inner display, and it's easy to see how this gap may have opened.

This isn't conclusive evidence by itself, but it is echoed by Android Authority's Paul Jones. According to Jones, the Z Fold 8 Ultra's crease is more pronounced than the Find N6's, and he also says the Z Fold's crease has gotten worse in just a few days.

However, he's at pains to say both phone creases feel exactly the same in use, so there's no need to panic just yet.

Samsung has done a lot of work on the display in this generation of the Z Fold, adding Flex Titanium beneath the screen to strengthen the glass, and adding a whole new hinge that should make opening and closing the device easier. However, any innovation opens the door to new problems, and it's possible an increased crease is one of these this year.

Speaking personally, I have a few years' experience with the , a phone with a far more notable crease than either of these two newer phones. During my time using this foldable, I stopped noticing the crease quite early into my use. It's only really noticeable when the light hits it at a certain angle — and in terms of touch, your finger gets used to it even faster. In my experience, worrying about the crease is an overblown problem, as it's something that stops being a problem once you get used to it.

In short, this is alarming, but it's probably not anything to worry about yet.
