Cameron Norrie produced a remarkable turnaround to down third seed Alex de Minaur after he saved one match point on his way victory in the third round of the National Bank Open in Montreal.

Norrie won 5-7 7-6 (5) 6-1 against the Australian to continue his hot streak, with the British No 2 hoping to go even better than his semi-final run in Mexico, eyeing a shot at his first singles title since his sole triumph at Indian Wells in 2021.

The pattern for the last-32 contest in Canada started with De Minaur able to break Norrie immediately before the Brit raced into a 4-1 lead.

World No 7 De Minaur stayed calm and after he broke back, the Australian edged a hard-fought first after 62 minutes.

Norrie was staring down the barrel when De Minaur broke twice in the second to establish a 5-2 advantage, but the former Wimbledon semi-finalist saved match point before he hit back instantly and took the tie-break to force a decider.

With De Minaur’s resistance broken, Norrie cruised home with three more breaks in the third set to win after two hours and 53 minutes and continue his excellent form with a sixth victory in seven matches since a first-round exit at Wimbledon.

Norrie now faces the challenge of Frenchman Arthur Fils in the round of 16, but feels his resilient mentality could be key to overcoming yet another stern test.

"Everyone is so tough,” he said. “I'm playing the next highest guy Fils - he's one of the best players in the world when he's confident and playing well but I'm just so happy.

"I've got some time to rest, happy with my attitude. I played every single point and that's what I came to do and it was the icing on the cake to win the match."
